Sengai (1750-1837) is known as a Zen priest of the late Edo period, famous for humorous but sophisticated paintings that enlightened the commoners with Buddhist philosophy. He was called "Sengai-san of Hakata" with much respect. This exhibition will explore the world of Zen that nurtured Sengai, through the numerous paintings and calligraphy he created. We would also like you to feel the message and teaching that Sengai embodied in his Zen paintings. Also on special display are items from the so-called Shōsaian (his hermitage) collection related to Priest Ikkyū (1394-1481), another renowned Zen priest.
